my sink is full of dishes. there's clutter in all areas of my home. i'm tired, grumpy and i feel like eating (which is not to say that i'm actually hungry). i owe the government tax money because although i cannot have taxes taken out of my fellowship, i still owe taxes on it (i call bullshit on that, by the way). somehow, only a day after getting my paycheck, it is almost gone. i am not even halfway done with the 400+ pages of our mutual friend (whose friend? not mine) that i have to read by tomorrow. and of course this does not even touch on the fact that there is a ridiculously small amount of time before the semester is over and i have (at best) two very loosely conceived paper topics (i'm still in denial, so we won't go there just yet).
oh, and upstairs. this is actually what i came here to tell you; the other stuff just got in the way momentarily. i wanted to tell you what it's like to live here. so, i know that in general my area of town is considered somewhat, shall we say, ghetto. this is, of course, a gross overstatement. although there are a few more run-down buildings around here than in other areas of town, and i live near the ghetto-est grocery store in all of madison, overall there is nothing fundamentally sketchy about where i live (we'll leave bus-stalker out of this, since i don't think he actually lives near me). the problem for me is not necessarily the location per se, but my apartment complex and more specifically the unit in this complex that i happen to inhabit. you may already be privy to some of my woes, but i will break down the shittiness of where i live so that it may be seen as a comprehensive whole:
aside from the fact that the company that owns this complex fired ("let go") my boyfriend for no apparent reason, they kind of sort of don't give a shit about their tenants. there is scattered trash all over the parking lot and on the grounds. the thermostat for the building (we don't control our own heat) is set at like *80 (i'm not kidding), and despite my numerous complaints, it doesn't seem high on the priority list of things-to-fix. for now, and over the winter, it is only mildly a pain in the ass because it just means we have to leave the windows open all the time. however, as it gets warmer outside, it gets equally warmer inside, so while this is not a problem yet, there will be a time when the outside temperature is the same as the inside, and opening the windows is no longer a remedy. in addition to having had valuable laundry stolen (which admittedly is not management's fault, but it still sucks), our mailbox is askew and difficult to lock back up, so half the time the mailperson just leaves it cracked open.
but the best part, really, is the people upstairs. as many of you know, lady of the house likes beyonce. a lot. her daily music choice (yes. every. day.) oscillates between the song "crazy in love" on repeat, or this short playlist she has (it sounds like stuff you'd hear on slow jams hour) also on repeat. except for the times when they seemingly have company over, this is the extent of the selection. literally. i can't even listen to ani that much. so this is a bummer since not only are there no coffee shops within walking distance of me, but i actually like reading in my apartment when the shit upstairs isn't happening. i have a big space here with good lighting and a good table and a comfortable (but not too comfy) couch that i can also read on. i hammered at the ceiling the other night with a potato masher (it was the first thing i saw), which quieted things down a bit, but the problem is not limited to the music. they also like to fight. and, in accordance with their music, they like to fight frequently. i'm far past my first reaction of anxiety and discomfiture. now i'm just annoyed. like, seriously, if he's such a crackhead sonofabitch, and she's a motherfucking bitch who cheats and fucks up all the time, why the fuck stay together?!? or at the very least, move to a fucking house for christ's sake so that i don't have to hear you yelling all the goddamn time.
i'm sure i could say some more about how much it sucks to live here (like the shitty bus service or the fact that my address isn't really where i live, making it impossible for people to find it), but i think i've said enough. boy howdy i can't wait to move.
